Engaging With Students’ Voices: Evaluating and Refining a Framework for Addressing Marginalization in Schools

Abstract

This paper will focus on the importance of engaging with students’ voices. Using illustrative examples from research conducted in schools in an English city with high levels of disadvantage, the aim is to demonstrate how, through the use of a framework, practitioners can collaborate with students and researchers in order to address issues related to marginalisation and, in so doing, facilitate inclusion. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected in order to evaluate the impact on the thinking and practice of teachers, and on the participation and learning of students. As a result of the analysis, the framework was refined and strategies for its effective use were developed. The paper will conclude with recommendations for addressing marginalisation in schools.
