Pedagogy and Attitudes Toward Immigrants in Europe: An Analysis Using the IEA (International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement) International Civic and Citizenship Education Study

Abstract

Increased globalization has led to mobility and world-wide migration. The issue of immigration has come to the forefront with national debates on identity, sparked by a series of policies in European nations. Members of far-right parties are gaining seats in European Parliaments, some for the first time in many years. Given the nature of schools as a key component in the socialization process of youth, understanding the relationships between pedagogy and school climate and the development of positive attitudes toward immigrants is a potentially important lever for change. In this analysis, structural equation modeling is used to examine the relationship between pedagogy and positive attitude development in several European nations, using the 2008-9 IEA International Civic and Citizenship Education Study.
