Although the benefits of formative and structural assessment are becoming increasingly well known, formative assessment using measures of knowledge organization are rarely used in the classroom. In this paper, we provide evidence from a series of studies showing that structural assessment fulfills requirements of effective formative assessment. We also describe a computer-based, structural assessment for learning system that we are developing and user-testing in a college-level statistics course. Although in the early phase of testing, the system appears to be user friendly for teachers and is built on effective principles for supporting student learning. Thus, we believe that it can help the transition from what we know about formative and structural assessment into what we do in the classroom.
