How Art Practice Can Inform and Shape the Future of Visual Research in Education

Abstract

This paper will focuses on how models of art practice can influence and shape the future of visual research in education. Since the publication of Gustavo E. Fischman’s article ‘Reflections About Images, Visual Culture, and Educational Research’ in Educational Researcher more than a decade ago, there has been a growing interest in the potential of the visual as a way of inquiring into, and representing educational phenomena. Paying close attention to how artists work, and focusing, in particular, on the representational repertoires and scopic regimes they utilize in their work, provides alternative inquiry practices, analytical frames, and dissemination possibilities for visual researchers in education.
