Empowered Migrant Mothers: A Study of One Family Literacy Program

Abstract

The children of migrant workers in the United States are among the most at risk of failing in school, partly because of their mobility, and partly because migrant families are often considered outsiders in the communities in which they live. Migrant families typically do not have access to either the social contexts of the communities or the literacy practices that are valued within those contexts. The purpose of this narrative study was to describe and explain the perspectives on literacy and family literacy practices of migrant mothers who have participated in a family literacy program that has played a positive role in providing access to the mainstream for linguistically and culturally diverse families
