Schooling Experiences of Latino Immigrant Students

Abstract

The immigrant paradox, or the decline in achievement over subsequent immigrant generations, has been widely researched. Comparing across immigrant generations as well as gender, the schooling experiences of Latino students are analyzed. From the data, collected through focus group interviews, it can be concluded that Latino students are experiencing a number of different stressors in school, which can lead to feelings of insecurity and possibly underachievement. Schooling experiences differ across immigrant groups, with first generation students reporting fewer problems with teachers, more academic achievement and motivation, and less direct involvement in school violence. Information about the differences in schooling experiences across immigrant generations and gender could be of great importance to researchers, educators, and psychologists.
