When “One” Turns Into “Two or More”: Women in STEM in Academia

Sun, April 15, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Vancouver Convention Centre, Floor: First Level, West Room 121&122

Abstract

The dynamics for success that exist for women in STEM disciplines are complex. These dynamics are defined by the presence of the dominant male culture, a dominance of foreign faculty, issues of race and the attitudes that are embedded into the culture that men generally make better scientists, technologists, engineers, and mathematicians. To add to an already hostile and difficult environment is the change in the dynamic that exists in having more than the standard one female. This study will examine the experiences of females in a STEM environment, their roles, responsibilities, and socialization concerns as it relates to males, and other females in that environment. Many studies exist that addresses issues of isolation, the lack of socialization, the lack of mentoring, and the imbalance of responsibilities in the teaching, research and service relationships. Very few studies, if any, address the change in the dynamics when “she” is no longer the sole female and has to share that space. A qualitative assessment will be undertaken providing a voice for women who have experienced this phenomenon for the purposes of adding to the body of knowledge and shedding light on this changing trend in an effort to provide meaningful solutions and anecdotes for continued success.
