Inculcating Service-Learning in Higher Education: New Insights Into Institutional Leadership

Abstract

This paper addresses institutional leadership as a significant organizational factor in institutionalizing service-learning in higher education. Supported by conceptual frameworks and empirical evidence, this paper seeks to (a) challenge traditional conceptualization of institutional leadership, (b) offer new insights into the challenges facing campus leaders in implementing service-learning, (c) call attention to the role boards of trustees can play in institutionalizing service-learning in higher education, and (d) stress the role of students and community partners in encouraging institutional leadership to endorse service-learning. The session engages participants in dialogues concerning the implications of the knowledge shared for practice, policy and research.
