This study discusses a mathematics methods course assignment that was developed to help prospective teachers (PTs) make connections between theory and practice. The assignment, developing and implementing an observation protocol, called for PTs to identify what to look for during their practicum experience based on classroom readings. The results of the study revealed that in addition to using general ideas from the readings, the majority of PTs cited specific strategies directly from the readings in their written analysis of classroom activities, used readings as conversation starters with their mentor teachers, and focused on theory as a guide for their own teaching. Implications for mathematics teacher education are included.
