• In Event: Indigenous and Decolonizing Research Methodologies When Knowing Is Not Enough

Abstract

This presentation describes findings by a First Nations investigator to understand the policies and practices that led to the residential school era in Ontario and its impact on current Aboriginal student success in northern Ontario schools. The investigation began with the story of the Two Row Wampum Belt as an intent to record a relational concept between two solitudes and an understanding of ‘ethical space’ as an Indigenous point of view. The questions and issues that the investigator struggles with concern the design of ‘ethical space’ to encourage and support relations for Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal secondary student success such as through classroom transformation, policy interpretations, and inclusions of Aboriginal Elders as representatives of the ‘Indigenous institution’.
