Paper Summary

Slavery in Two Nations: Examining Slavery in Secondary U.S. and Brazilian History Textbooks

Fri, April 13, 12:00 to 1:30pm, Vancouver Convention Centre, Floor: Second Level, East Room 2&3

Abstract

The United States and Brazil were the two largest slave societies in the history of New World slavery and the varying legacies of that history remain salient in both nations. As a result, it is an important topic to be taught and learned in history courses. In this study I conducted a content analysis of secondary history textbooks in the two countries to compare how slavery is presented to students and to assess the degree to which the complexities and legacies of slavery are addressed.
