An Evaluation of a Tutoring and Mentoring Program Involving Undergraduate College Students and Elementary School English Learners

Abstract

The study evaluates a tutoring and mentoring program targeted at low income ELs in a mid sized city in the Southeast U.S. This evaluation tests the efficacy of a piece in a more comprehensive model for reducing the achievement gap for students placed at risk. The program involves a collaboration between a local university and an elementary school in an impoverished area. Perceptions of tutors and tutees were analyzed. Results indicate a meaningful transfer of social and educational capital from tutor to tutee as well as knowledge of educational barriers from tutee to tutor.
