Abstract

Indigenous stories were and are the cultural lifeblood for Nuu-chah-nulth people of the Pacific West Coast. This paper reports the process of systematizing Indigenous storywork principles, which are then used them as a conceptual framework in a discussion of Umeek narratives by Nuu-chah-nulth. Interrogating the Umeek story for learning principles with Elders permitted them to articulate attributes of an educational ideology and aided them to identify characteristics of learning from the story. This process provides the basis for discussion of how the Elders work to nature of learning and cultural knowing of stories as wisdom based storywork to move across worldviews.
