Race Dialogues in Teacher Preparation: From Understanding to Action

Mon, April 16, 8:15 to 9:45am, Vancouver Convention Centre, Floor: First Level, East Ballroom C

Abstract

The purpose of this action research project within a teacher preparation program was to address the dilemma of trying to prepare primarily white preservice teachers for educational arenas in which they will interface with students of color and many who are socially disadvantaged. This paper describes how a biracial professor (coordinator of an evening and Saturday MAT teacher preparation program for working students) and a white associate dean worked together to engage primarily white preservice teachers to explore the historical construction of race and allow racial biases to surface within a learning community
