This study examined the impact of digital game-based learning on students' motivation and complex problem-solving skill acquisition. A massively multiplayer online game (MMOG) was implemented with the ninth-grade students of a rural high school in the Midwest. Particular interest of investigation involved the interrelationships among motivation, game-play, and quality of problem representation. The results suggested that students actual game-play, specifically the time spent on game-play and the number of problem-solving tasks completed, had a positive relationship with students problem representation. In addition, the findings indicated that actual game-play was linked to students’ perceived competence, yet unfortunately their interest in game-play decreased over time. Based on the findings implications for research and design are discussed.
