Paper Summary

How Do Teacher Candidates Use Data and Reflection to Inform Classroom Instruction?

Sun, April 15, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Vancouver Convention Centre, Floor: First Level, East Ballroom B

Abstract

This action research project examines how and to what extent does explicit goal-setting and tracking impact student achievement in an elementary education program. Participants are teacher candidates in the iTeachAZ program at Arizona State University (ASU), an intensive training program that blends theory with practice, applying what is taught at the college level directly in the elementary school classroom. The purpose of this project is to examine the process in which teachers learn to use data, from increasing their knowledge base to applying that knowledge in the classroom. Using focus groups and work samples, results on how teacher candidates prepare to assess and respond to students and how they strategically set and track progress toward goals will be presented.
