Constructing a Quantitative Survey for Fostering Educational Resilience on a Qualitative Study Foundation

Abstract

This study utilized a qualitative study by Downey (2008) to create a professional development model that taught secondary teachers to utilize twelve recommendations for fostering students’ educational resilience. A quantitative, electronic survey was designed to measure the frequency of use of the twelve recommendations. The psychometric assessment of the survey revealed high reliability for eleven of the twelve recommendations by Downey. Principal Component Analysis determined a three factor structure was more statistically sound than Downey’s four factor model. Development of the survey is discussed along with implications for the scholarly significance of this work.
