Kinship Narratives: Transforming Boundaries of Knowing, Being, and Doing

Abstract

The construct of global citizenship is well represented in the goals, missions, and rhetoric of higher education institutions around the world. Consequently, there are multiple perspectives on the definition and value of the aforementioned construct; e.g., emphasis on competition in a global market, the promotion of peace, heightened awareness of ‘living in an increasingly interconnected world’, etc. As part of the endeavor to promote global citizenship, post-secondary institutions in particular continue to expand opportunities for international education experiences. Many of these efforts are focused on competencies, primarily related to language, culture, and specific content knowledge. As an alternative to more goal oriented competency outcomes, this paper highlights a kinship narrative co-created through a shared, formal international education experience.
