Informal Learning Environments as 21st-Century Preservice Learning Spaces for Teachers

Abstract

Preparing teachers for schools of tomorrow within the constraints of the today’s schools is a challenge, particularly when many schools are highly structured spaces that can rarely support technology-rich, interest-driven learning -- core aspects of 21st century learning (Ito et al., 2010). As an alternative to more traditional pre-service teaching placements in formal classroom environments, we conducted a study of 50 pre-service teachers with alternative placements in technology-rich, informal learning environments. Findings suggest that time spent in these spaces supports not only the valuation and recognition of 21st century learning, but also participation in these practices, including collaborative creation, play and problem solving. The paper argues that informal learning spaces offer distinct opportunities to prepare teachers for 21st Century classrooms.
