Encounters With Excellence: A Study of the Role of College Knowledge in Persistence Through the First Year of College

Sun, April 15, 8:15 to 9:45am, Vancouver Convention Centre, Floor: Second Level, West Room 212&213

Abstract

The best practices described in the proposed paper session are ones that may sound familiar when viewed in relation to the larger body of higher education literature. However, what is different about the discussion to be presented here is the fact that the constellation of interventions that will be discussed are rarely expounded upon in relation to one another. In fact, much of the existing literature appears to assume that the implementation of one single intervention will lead to exemplary outcomes. However, for urban first-generation college-goers who face numerous challenges as they endeavor to persist through college, it is unlikely that one intervention will fully address these students’ needs and provide them with the tools necessary to overcome these challenges.
