Germs, Pathology, and the Laboratory: The Dissemination of Medical Discourses in Writing Pedagogy During the Late 19th Century

Abstract

This paper uses archival research from previously overlooked documents from the journal School Review to explore the relationship between medical discourses and writing pedagogy during the late nineteenth century in the United States. Evidence suggests that health and disease concerned educational reformers equally to those of economics, labor, and morality. This paper contributes to the historiography of secondary English studies and to a collective understanding of the history of secondary education.
