Efforts to Expand Undergraduate Math and Science Teacher Pipeline: Preliminary Findings About CalTeach

Abstract

The University of California’s Science and Math Teacher Initiative (CalTeach) is intended to help address California’s serious deficit of well-qualified K-12 math and science teachers by improving undergraduate pipeline to math and science teaching credentials. CalTeach is recruiting and preparing science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) majors for future teaching careers by providing coursework and field experiences in K-12 schools. The study sheds a light on demographic and academic characteristics of STEM majors who participated in the UC’s endeavor to expand its undergraduate math and science teacher pipeline, and 2) the study investigates a relationship among CalTeach students’ characteristics, and educational experience, and enrollment in teacher education programs and attainment of a teaching credential.
