Academic Achievement in Supplemental Educational Services: An Experimental Study of an Online Reading Program

Abstract

The paper concerns a year-long, national evaluation of Educate Online, an online, at home, 1:1 supplemental educational services program aimed at improving reading performance for middle school students who are below grade level. The research employed a randomized controlled trial involving nearly 400 middle school students to determine the relationship between student academic achievement in reading with involvement in the supplemental program. Participating students significantly outperformed students in the control group as indicated by the CAT/5 reading assessment. The lowest-performing treatment students experienced the greatest gain in their achievement scores. Researchers did not see a significant relationship between session hours and academic gain. It is hoped that the study informs both school administrators and educational researchers.
