Doctoral Students’ Socialization in the Life Sciences in Chile and the United States: Pursuing Science From Childhood Through Adulthood

Abstract

This ongoing qualitative study that uses life history interview is aiming to understand how graduate students in the life sciences in Chile and the United States became interested in pursuing science, how they have made decisions across their life stages, and how they are socialized in their current doctoral programs and laboratories. The preliminary results suggest that the process of being socialized is similar for Chilean and US students in terms of the life stages they have been experiencing across their lives. This raises the questions of whether science is a transnational activity and its implications for developing science at the tertiary educational level. Complete results and implications will be reported before and during AERA conference.
