A Cognitive-Development Analysis of the Paul and Elder Critical Thinking Framework

Abstract

Paul and Elder have developed a comprehensive framework for critical thinking that includes three broad dimensions: elements of thoughts, intellectual standards, and intellectual traits. The breadth and depth of the framework can be overwhelming as individual students attempt to develop the skills and habits of mind and apply the framework to problems in a variety of settings. This paper presents a cognitive-development analysis of the elements in the Paul and Elder framework grounded in King and Kitchener’s reflective judgment model. The analysis provides guidance for teaching the Paul and Elder framework in a “step-wise” manner to guide development and assess student progress.
