Culturally Responsive School-Wide Positive Behavioral Supports: An Equity-Oriented Systemic Change Model to Address Minority Disproportionality

Mon, April 16, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Vancouver Convention Centre, Floor: First Level, West Room 113

Abstract

The proposed session will introduce a culturally responsive School-wide Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports framework informed by a critical process-oriented cultural theory of practice that can be infused into standard models at strategic points of SWPBIS. The framework is based on cultural historical activity theory that provides theoretical and methodological tools for understanding and influencing collective goal-directed school activities to create sustainable, meaningful, and effective positive and supportive school climate and social-cognitive organizations of classrooms. It focuses on utilizing an interdisciplinary knowledge base on culturally responsive curriculum and instruction, formative intervention, systemic transformation, family-school collaboration, collation building, and data based decision-making. Development of CRSWPBS and its implementation effort in the state of Wisconsin will be also discussed.
