Sources of Reading Self-Efficacy in High-Stakes Testing

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relative contribution of Bandura’s (1997) hypothesized sources of self-efficacy to the prediction of three types of reading self-efficacy and to determine the degree to which reading self-efficacy predicts the reading achievement of students in Grades 4-6 (N = 364). All four hypothesized sources predicted general reading self-efficacy and self-regulatory self-efficacy in reading. Three of the four sources predicted reading tests self-efficacy. Self-efficacy, out-of-school reading, and teacher rating of motivation predicted students’ standardized test scores in reading. Teacher rating of student motivation and self-efficacy predicted reading grades.
