Reality of Bilingualism When Home and School Languages Are Intersected

Abstract

Bilingualism is a controversial topic when we discuss the experiences of immigrant children and families. The purposes of this qualitative study are: 1) to investigate the perspectives of Korean immigrant children and families, second-generation children of Korean immigrants, and their schoolteachers living in the southern U.S. on bilingualism, 2) to provide “a space for people to engage critically and reflectively with issues” (Freeman, 2006, p.84) that affect the experiences of immigrant children and families, and 3) to offer suggestions for schoolteachers, community educators, or policy makers working with immigrant students and families.
