Parents and educators rarely take the time to try to understand why many students seem unengaged in their school education, but engaged in playing video games. It is only by initiating authentic dialogues with these students that we can understand what games mean to them. This study adopted a phenomenological approach to examining what it is that students find most motivating about game-play, formulated a survey, and collected quantitative data to add scope and breadth to the qualitative results. The qualitative part found 22 significant structures; the quantitative part found 5 constructs were reliable, and frequent gamers agreed with these constructs significantly more than non frequent gamers.
