Mon, April 16, 8:15 to 9:45am, Vancouver Convention Centre, Floor: First Level, East Ballroom B

Abstract

Carved out of a larger case study that sought to understand Experiences of Girls in a Center of Excellence, this paper explores the meaning and power of education as an empowering tool through the lens of one female teacher. Utilizing reflective and experiential data this paper presents her triumphs and challenges of empowering marginalized girls in the Center of Excellence in Kenya. Her tenacious fight against the tide of retrogressive cultural practices of child marriages, female genital mutilation and poverty is a testament of the power of education and the spirit of giving back to the community.
