Authentic L2 (Second Language) Literacy Practice Through Dialogue Journals: A Young English-Language-Learner’s Journey as an Author

Tue, April 17, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Vancouver Convention Centre, Floor: First Level, East Ballroom A

Abstract

Literacy acquisition requires daily practice. The study uses dialogue journals based on Bakhtin’s dialogism to investigate how English language learners (ELLs) construct their meaning through second language (L2) literacy activities. Four findings emerged through the qualitative case study: Anthony as an emergent author; reading and learning through dialogue journals; Anthony as an active artist; and Anthony as a collaborator within the boundaries constructed by dialogue journals. Discussion and implication address a sense of authorship and identity, L2 literacy practice through drawings, content learning through L2 literacy practice, and a new partnership with the teacher.
