This session provides an overview of the National Common Planning Time (CPT) Project, sponsored by the MLER SIG. Common planning time is a critical component of the middle school concept; research suggests that CPT is essential to the successful education of young adolescents. Phase I of the CPT project, launched in 2007, consisted of qualitative data collection through the use of observation and interview protocols and included over 30 schools in 12 states. Phase II (2009) is comprised of an online teacher survey focusing on varying aspects of CPT and teacher instructional practices. Results from both phases will be described and discussed.
