Session Submission Type: Symposium
This symposium considers the broad educational potential of new pedagogies and curricula in Physical Education. The four research projects discussed all draw upon an innovative constructivist teaching approach known as Teaching Games for Understanding (TGfU) pioneered in the 1980s and now a burgeoning global initiative in the field. The papers offered consider how TGfU pedagogies and curriculum can serve to promote 1) effective engagement and agency with pre-service Physical Education teachers in the US 2) tactical knowledge structures and decision-making with fifth grade students in the US 3) the skills and attributes for democratic citizenship with teachers and students in an action research project in Canada, and 4) emergent learning with Canadian pre-service teachers and teacher educators.
