Cosmopolitanism and Cultural Creativity

Abstract

This symposium features four presentations on cosmopolitanism and education. The presenters approach cosmopolitanism as a frame for understanding how people in contemporary societies find meaning in cross-cultural interaction. The concept spotlights how people can move beyond tolerance of difference, as important as that is, to appreciating and learning from it. The presenters draw from diverse areas of research, among them anthropology of education, literacy studies, media studies, philosophy of education, and technology. They conceive curriculum and education broadly, as an ongoing, uneven, and unpredictable constellation of activities and processes that is larger in scope and often more persistent in impact than schooling. Their research attends especially to the creative capacity of children and youth as they encounter challenge and difference.
