Session Submission Type: Symposium
“Education must become the agent rather than the object of change” (AERA, 2011). Therefore, this session features empirical and theoretical perspectives of scholars who as women of color constitute a diverse group of “committed intellectuals [willing to] move into spaces beyond the academy to participate in real change” (Ladson-Billings & Donnor, p. 297, 2005). In particular, this session examines research about and identifies trends that are impacting women of color in higher education and considers the implications for practice, disciplined inquiry and further research. Collectively, these cross-national contributions employ alternative paradigms and suggest interest convergence or sociopolitical decision making benefitting people of color and others who are marginalized, as a vehicle to improve postsecondary education for the greater good (Bell, 1980).
