Session Submission Summary

Harnessing Psychometric Models to Develop Next-Generation, Research-Based Assessments of Rational Number Knowledge

Fri, April 13, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Sheraton Wall Centre, Floor: Grand Ballroom Level, North Grand Ballroom B

Session Submission Type: Symposium

Abstract

This symposium brings together two projects that are harnessing psychometric models to develop assessments of rational number that are grounded in mathematics education research and aligned with current standards, including the Common Core State Standards. One project is developing assessments for in-service middle grades teachers, the second is developing assessments for elementary grades students. The presentations will address themes that include (a) developing test items using mathematics education research on fractions, (b) developing test forms for use with particular psychometric models, and (c) using psychometric models to analyze test data. The symposium will provide opportunities for mathematics education researchers to discuss opportunities and challenges for harnessing psychometric models to address significant challenges in assessing K-12 students and teachers.
