Bridging New Literacy Studies, Classroom Language Ethnography, and Bourdieu’s Social Philosophy

Sat, April 14, 8:15 to 10:15am, Vancouver Convention Centre, Floor: Second Level, West Room 206

Session Submission Type: Symposium

Abstract

In this symposium we explore ways to bridge classroom language ethnography, the New Literacy Studies (NLS), and Bourdieu’s social philosophy. We take the position that although there are multiple ways to bridge NLS, classroom language ethnography, and Bourdieu’s social philosophy, doing so must be principled and must be cognizant of the broader sociological agenda Bourdieu proposed. Bourdieu claimed that the purpose of his social philosophy was to see the world in a new way, - ‘a new gaze’ - what he termed ‘metanoia.’ Four studies are presented that bridge classroom ethnography, NLS, and Bourdieu’s social philosophy; followed by a fifth paper that provides an analysis and synthesis that highlights the affordances of such bridging.
