Latino/a Students Using New Digital Technologies to Develop Hybrid Literacies and Craft Agentive Selves

Abstract

Providing a close-up view, through the complexity of an ethnographic approach, this session explores how Latino students are using new digital technologies to design digital texts as expressions of hybrid literacies, agentive identities and reflective practices. We share analyses of the multimodal digital compositions and practices of children, adolescents and adults, reflecting diversity in Latino heritage and experiences. Rather than falling on the wrong side of national, linguistic and digital divides, students reveal resilience, strong voices and expertise in navigating living and learning with new media. The studies shared in our papers talk back to deficit discourses and digital divide narratives about Latinos and demonstrate pedagogical approaches for appropriating digital tools in multiple contexts.
