Session Submission Type: Symposium
The interactive symposium will focus on systemic and sociocultural factors that currently undermine equitable science practices in out-of-school settings and the manner they have been addressed in the field through case studies of possibilities in museums, afterschool and community programs, as well as professional development drawing upon OST settings. In light of the meeting theme, the actions of possibilities offer illustrations of cultural practices of science that are driven by equity, democracy, and supportive of critical science literacy development. They also put to work different theoretical frameworks useful for such action. The session will conclude with implications for practice that will help the field more seriously engage with the complex dynamic of the manner diversity plays out in informal settings.
