Culturally Grounded Research Approaches With Communities of Color and Immigrant Communities in Urban and Rural Contexts

Abstract

This course provides graduate students and researchers opportunities to engage varied notions of “culture” in research with, by and for communities of color and immigrant communities in urban and rural contexts. Four interactive panels will focus on conducting culturally grounded research with immigrant community-based organizations, Asians, Blacks, Latin@s and Native Americans. One panel explores examples of reciprocity within and across the delineated communities. Question-and-answer sessions will focus on the course participants’ research in relation to the panel topic. Participants will be provided with course materials and access to a website for support. Participants will prepare by (1) reading two articles and (2) posting a one-page summary to the course website of a research idea centering “culture” to discuss in the course.
