Session Submission Summary

The Citizenship Education Dilemma: Implications for Civic Education Reform in Multicultural Nations

Sat, April 14, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Vancouver Convention Centre, Floor: Second Level, West Room 202&203

Session Submission Type: Symposium

Abstract

Educators in nation-states throughout the world experience the citizenship dilemma when their students are taught democratic ideals and values within social, economic, political, and educational contexts that contradict justice, equality, human rights, and other democratic ideals. The papers in this session will examine how the meaning of citizenship, identity, and various forms of inequality are challenging institutionalized notions of citizenship education, how nation-states are dealing with these challenges, and how citizenship education can be reformed to deal effectively with ethnic, cultural, and linguistic diversity. Presenters will also discuss the theoretical, empirical, and practical knowledge that informs citizenship education within global contexts.
