Coproduction Practices: Reconfiguring Professional Knowledge and Work

Abstract

This symposium examines an increasing phenomenon in arrangements of work practices known as ‘co-production’, defined in simple terms as professional services and products that are co-developed with clients or consumers. These arrangements have been shown to generate profound shifts in notions of professionalism and professional identity, knowledge, agency, relations with community, and responsibility. Through comparative empirical analyses presented across four papers examining co-production in different professional spheres (policing, librarians, creative industries, and teaching), this symposium (i) analyses forms of co-production emerging in different professional and interprofessional activities and the issues it raises for professional work and knowing; (ii) examines professional and interprofessional learning within arrangements of co-production; and (iii) explores implications for policy and for professional education posed by co-production.
