Tue, April 17, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Vancouver Convention Centre, Floor: Second Level, West Room 215&216

Session Submission Type: Symposium

Abstract

This symposium seeks to advance theory and research by bringing together scholars employing person-centered approaches to study motivation. The five papers identify motivational profiles among elementary, middle school, high school, and college students and examine developmental shifts in these profiles. The papers highlight the similarity of profiles identified across varied research programs utilizing different age groups as well as varied theoretical and methodological approaches. The symposium also illustrates the diversity of methodological approaches that can be employed to identify motivational profiles and track their development over time. A key aim of this session is to stimulate discussion of person-centered approaches for studying student motivation and highlight the implications of this approach for informing theory and educational practice.
