Session Submission Type: Symposium

Abstract

Ensuring the successful academic achievement and educational attainment of Black students is imperative for all those concerned with educating youth in our nation’s schools. Understanding the educational choices that currently exist will positively impact how parents, teachers and educational researchers can be effective advocates for Black youth. This symposium addresses the array of school options that exist for Black students and their families today by focusing on selected researches from the forthcoming volume Black Educational Choice. Panelists, also editors of the volume, will discuss historical and contemporary realities that influence educational choices for Black students while addressing issues important to parents and youth and the relevant policy implications.
