Session Submission Summary

Bridging Research and Practice: From Cognitive Principles to Design Principles of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment

Sun, April 15, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Sheraton Wall Centre, Floor: Third Level, North Junior Ballroom D

Session Submission Type: Symposium

Abstract

How can cognitive principles of memory and learning meaningfully inform the design of classroom materials? To realize the potential of these principles in classrooms, we assert, requires cognitive principles be recast as design principles -- specific guidelines to generate, select, and organize particular curriculum content, and instruction and assessment practices -- as a necessary bridge between research and practice. The presenters, members of the National Center on Cognition and Mathematics Instruction (NCCMI), will report on the development, refinement, and integration of design principles as they are applied to a principles-based redesign of a widely used middle school mathematics curriculum-- Connected Mathematics Project 2 (CMP2). This is framed as translational research, where cognitive theory informs curriculum design, instruction and assessment practices.
