Educational Agency and Transformation: Enacting Pathways for Empowerment With Latino Educators and Youth

Abstract

This symposium will present emerging research informed by or employing critical pedagogy as it relates to the education of Latino students, via four unique and transformative vantage points and varying foci. These researchers employ multiple critical frameworks including community cultural wealth, multi-literacies, critical pedagogy, and indigenous practices. Their research is concerned with reinventing the culture of schools where education includes the refinement of moral and spiritual sensitivity, empathy, compassion, mutual aid, and an individual’s concern for justice and truth (Miller, 2000). Together, their scholarship illustrates, that despite the dominant culture’s worldview, characterized by possessive, competitive individualism (Smith, 1993), education has the transformative potential to foster and nurture the courage and understanding needed to fundamentally counter oppressive perspectives, attitudes, and beliefs.
