Abstract

This symposium addresses three key issues in preparing pre-service teachers to teach English language learners (ELLs) in U.S. schools. It draws upon data collected between 2009 and 2011 from four teacher education courses that share a core curriculum. Presenters will focus on a) examination of a theoretical framework for teacher education programs to prepare pre-service teachers of ELLs, b) three case studies of pre-service teacher learning in a course that aimed to help them understand how to teach ELLs and its implications for preparation of pre-service teachers of ELLs, and c) analyses of pre-service teacher learning about the English language and its implications for expanding the linguistic knowledge base of pre-service teachers
