Session Submission Type: Symposium
The middle grades mark a critical point of transition for students on their educational pathways and in their personal development. Success in the middle grades helps ensure student achievement in 9th grade, a prime indicator of success in high school. Unfortunately, it is at this point that many students begin to lose ground on the National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP) (Williams, Kirst, Haertel, et al., 2010). It is thus imperative that middle-grade students be supported by high functioning schools, classrooms, and teachers equipped with the capacity to serve their academic and developmental needs. This symposium will bring together four papers focused on different strategies for improving middle grade schools and outcomes for middle grade students.
