Abstract

In this presentation, authors of the anthology, Transforming City Schools Through Art: Approaches to Meaningful K-12 Learning (2012, Teachers College Press), articulate a vision celebrating and capitalizing on the educational, cultural, community, and artistic possibilities of the city. We present the integral role art can play in creating meaningful learning experiences across the disciplines. Our practices and research provide evidence on the affects art can have in the lives of diverse urban students. We are committed to overturn the usual talk of urban education as underprivileged, arguing the educational promise the city holds to students extends beyond schools to include the rich and varied resources to be mined in cultural, communal, artistic, individual, family, institutional, and organizational settings.
