The State of Single-Sex Schooling: Theoretical, Empirical, Methodological, and Legal Issues

Abstract
The number of single-sex schools in the U.S. has climbed steadily, despite a lack of consensus that such schools lead to academic or psychological outcomes superior to those of coeducational schools. In this symposium, leading scholars with diverse areas of expertise discuss core issues related to single-sex schooling. Topics include (a) claims concerning sex differences in brain structure and function as a rationale for single-sex schooling, (b) the methodological characteristics and findings of empirical studies designed to evaluate the efficacy of single-sex schools, (c) consequences of gender segregation for children’s social behavior, (d) stakeholders’ views of single-sex schooling, (e) theoretical and empirical work addressing whether single-sex schooling reduces gender stereotyping, and (f) legal issues surrounding public single-sex schooling.
